Murder in the Masai Mara: Putting Julie Ward Back at the Centre of the Story

Now that all five episodes of Murder in the Masai Mara are out (produced and sound designed by me for The Telegraph), I’ve been reflecting on the response to the series – particularly a message from our main contributor, Julie Ward’s sister Bob Ward:

“Julie as a person often gets lost in this story, as the headlines are always about murder, corruption or government wrongdoing. I wanted Julie front and centre of the podcast which aligned with your own thoughts. You and the team clearly achieved this and I am very grateful.

As you will have become aware the Wards don’t give praise lightly, but in this case enormous praise is well deserved.”

Anyone who works in narrative podcasts dealing with stories of trauma, tragedy, and injustice will understand how much this means.

Julie was murdered in Kenya in 1988. Her father John spent the next 30 years trying to uncover the truth – but he died in 2023 without seeing justice.

In our series, Katherine Rushton pieces together what happened to Julie, why there was a cover up – and ultimately, whether the person the Wards think did it escaped justice.

Inside the Cardiff Premiere:
Narrative Storytelling Meets Live Theatre

In December 2025 I travelled to Cardiff for the debut of an interactive theatre piece I researched and wrote for Mega Events. This wasn’t just a show – it was an exploration of how investigative storytelling techniques used in podcast documentary work can translate to live performance narrative – which was a totally new experience for me. With 800+ seats filled, we saw how in-depth research, narrative structure, and audience engagement can come together on stage.

I’m now starting work writing the next lot of shows which will be across the UK in 2026. Tickets here.
